Wild camping a few miles from Gedaref near the Sudan/Ethiopian border. We crossed the next day and the difference between the feel and look of the 2 countries was like night and day. Ethiopia is densely populated, cultivated and much lusher on the whole than Sudan. In Ethiopia the children and young adults have very few inhibitions about demanding money or gifts from you and they do it in a manner which ranges from mildly bullish to robustly aggressive. However we only encountered potential stone throwers on a couple of occasions (contrary to some guide books' hysterical claims) and on the second I stopped the car and told the young person to put it DOWN in no uncertain terms. He got the message.
